Stage Door School of Dance prides itself on the company we keep as well as our ability to provide unique learning opportunities for our dancers, as much as possible. This year’s SDSD Mini-Convention 2019 is no exception!

BLAIRE BROOKS

MASTER CLASS: Acting for Dancers

BLAIRE BROOKS started her professional acting career in NYC after receiving her MFA in theater performance from Rutgers University in 2005. Blaire has been very fortunate to have maintained a career in TV and Film over the years with roles in Friends from College, Bull, The Following, Blacklist, Forever, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, as well as national commercials for Zyrtec, Baí, and Microsoft. Last spring she co-starred in Netflix’s Like Father, with Kristen Bell and Seth Rogen and was fortunate enough to work with Jake Gyllenhaal in Jean Marc Valleé’s Demolition. Currently Blaire holds an adjunct position teaching Acting I and II with a concentration in the Meisner Technique to first year Musical Theater majors at PACE University. Blaire is super excited to be back with the amazing and incredible stars of SDSD!

CHAZ WOLCOTT

MASTER CLASS: BROADWAY THEATER JAZZ

CHAZ WOLCOTT is a dancer, choreographer and director based in New York City. His directing & choreography credits include: Broadway Backwards (Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre), Red Bucket Follies & Gypsy of the Year (Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre); Kiss Me Kate, Mary Poppins and Crazy for You (Forestburgh Playhouse); La Cage aux Folles, Newsies and Cats (Interlakes Theatre); Thoroughly Modern Millie (Broward Stage Door Theatre) and three more productions of Newsies around the country. He is on faculty at Broadway Dance Center and Steps on Broadway in New York City, and tours with Celebrity & The Streetz Dance Conventions. He has served on faculty of the Big Apple Tap Festival and the Kansas City Jazz Dance Intensive. He is a proud alum of Oklahoma City University, where he earned his BFA in Dance. As an actor, he has been seen on the National Tours of Newsies and Cats (Mister Mistoffelees0 and plays “Buttons” in the live film version of Disney’s Newsies now available on iTunes and Netflix. He was a featured contestant on “So You Think You Can Dance” and has performed at NY City Center Encores and in Broadway’s Easter Bonnet and Gypsy of the Year. Chaz has been seen performing in dozens of musicals around the country including White Christmas, Legally Blonde, Singin’ in the Rain, Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, Gypsy, Footloose, and Hello, Dolly! MICHAELJON SLINGER

Master class: Contemporary dance

MICHAELJON SLINGER is originally from Queensland, Australia. Michaeljon moved to the United States in 2004 after winning the Australian Dancer of the Year Award and was given a full scholarship to attend American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. He then went on to enroll in the B.F.A. dance program at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, making him the first Australian ever to be accepted into either one of these programs. During his time at Juilliard, Michaeljon was fortunate enough to perform the works of such acclaimed choreographers such as Jirí Kylián, Antony Tudor and Twyla Tharp. Soon after, Michaeljon made his Broadway debut as an original cast member and Dance Captain of the 2009 revival of West Side Story, directed by Arthur Laurents.

Michaeljon has continued his career on Broadway as both a performer and Dance Captain. He has appeared in the Broadway companies of Billy Elliot the Musical, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (original company starring Daniel Radcliffe), Evita (original company starring Ricky Martin), Side Show (original company), and Matilda. He recently finished as Dance Captain of the 2017 revival of Broadway’s Hello, Dolly! starring Bette Midler. In addition to working on Broadway over the past several years, Michaeljon has been performing in numerous productions regionally and throughout New York City, including the one- night-only performance of Guys & Dolls starring Nathan Lane, Patrick Wilson, and Megan Mullally. He has also been busy appearing in both film and television, with some of his most notable televised credits including the 2010 Kennedy Center Honors, both the 2011 and 2014 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the 2011 and 2012 Tony Awards and most recently, the 2015 Academy Awards. He was also a part of the opening number of the major motion picture Ted 2 directed by Seth MacFarlane.

Michaeljon made his West End debut in August of 2018 as the Associate Director/ Choreographer of a brand new musical called Mythic, Directed by Sarah O’Gleby. Michaeljon continues to choreograph today, most recently working alongside Lorin Latarro as the Associate Choreographer on Michael Mayer’s world premier of La Traviata at The Metropolitan Opera, and as the Assistant Choreographer/Dance Captain of Roundabout Theatre & Fiasco Theatre’s production of Merrily We Roll Along in New York.

  • 12:40 - 1:10 pm Lunch Break *FOOD IS PROVIDED (Sandwiches, Pizza, Salad, Fruit)

  • 1:15 - 2:30 pm 3rd Master Class

  • 2:30 - 3:00 pm Panel Prep

  • 3:00 - 8:00 pm Adjudication Panel
    (Starting with ALL Jazz Classes. Panel is for LARGE GROUPS ONLY including our three SD Prep classes.)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • All dancers who wish to participate must submit their $80 convention fee no later than Wednesday February 27. Fee includes three master classes, lunch, and panel.

  • We are in need of parent-volunteers to help us set-up, serve, and clean up the lunch portion of our day. If you are available between 12 pm - 2 pm, and are interested in helping out, please let us know via email or stopping by the front desk.

  • Studio doors will open no earlier than 9:20 am on March 3rd, so please do not arrive prior to that time.
